Lenovo ThinkPad X1

Although the ThinkPad line of notebooks from Lenovo is synonymous with business laptops, there hasnt been a 13-inch ThinkPad since the old X301. The all new ThinkPad X1 promises to deliver all the features and dependability you expect from a ThinkPad inside a thin and lightweight 13-inch laptop.

Our review unit of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 features the following specifications:

* Intel Core i5-2520M dual-core processor (2.5GHz, 3MB cache, 3.2GHz Turbo frequency)
* Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
* 13.3-inch HD (1366 x 768) LED Backlit Display with Corning Gorilla Glass
* Intel Integrated HD 3000 Graphics
* 4GB DDR3 (1333MHz)
* 320GB Hitachi Travelstar hard drive (Z7K320)
* Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (Taylor Peak) 2x2 AGN wireless card
* Bluetooth
* 720p High Definition webcam
* Fingerprint reader
* Integrated 6-cell battery (38.92Wh) and optional slice battery (36Wh)
* Warranty: 3-year
* Dimensions: 13.26 (L) x 9.1 (W) x 0.65-0.84 (H) inches
* Weight: 3.75 lbs.
* Price as configured: $1,399.00 ($1,549.00 with external slice battery)

Build and Design
Lenovo took a lot of time developing the X1 before bringing this notebook to market. As previously mentioned, the last 13-inch ThinkPad was the X301, and while that particular notebook wasnt wildly popular for Lenovo, business customers have been asking for a 13-inch business laptop with a thin and light design that still delivers serious performance and is loaded with more ports than a 13-inch MacBook Air.

Can the ThinkPad X1 be the spiritual successor of the X301 and offer the attractive consumer appeal of a MacBook? Lets take a closer look to find out.

In terms of build quality and durability, the new X1 offers many of the same hallmarks of previous generation ThinkPads. You get a well-made chassis with roll cage protection that passes 8 separate MIL spec tests (humidity, low temperature, high temperature, extreme temperatures, sand, altitude, vibration and mechanical shock). You also get a spill-resistant keyboard with drain holes and that traditional matte-black rubberized paint finish that resists scratches and fingerprint smudges.

One interesting quirk of the design of the X1 is that the hinge, although very durable, allows the screen to open until the notebook is perfectly flat. This wouldnt typically be worth mentioning, but since the X1 has a screen with Gorilla Glass the lid is heavier than usual. If you hold the palmrests of the X1 in your hands and shake the notebook the screen will swing completely open.

A quick look at the bottom of the ThinkPad X1 reveals little in the way of expansion possibilities. There is a hard drive access panel on the right side of the notebook which is held in place by a screw on the bottom of the X1. If you want to upgrade the RAM or swap out the wireless card youll need to remove the keyboard and possibly part of the chassis depending on the type of work youre doing.

Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G

Surround system. The new 18 inch flagship comes with the quad core processor, Intel Core i7-2630QM, and the Nvidia GeForce GT 555M graphics solution. Not only are the 16 GB RAM and the installed speedy SSD striking, but the touchpad as well. It can be removed and used as a remote control. The steep price for the notebook: 1699 euros.

Acer announced new models of the Acer Aspire Ethos range in June. The model Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G is available in the most various alternatives in the meantime. The predecessor of the previously reviewed Acer Aspire Ethos 8950G belongs to the heavyweight category with just under four kilos. Acers 18.4 incher is available starting at 1300 euros, depending on the configuration. The Taiwanese manufacturer relies on Intels quad core, i7-2630QM , together with Nvidias Geforce GT 555M for this. The combination of the quad core processor, based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with a base clock of 2 GHz, and the fast midrange graphics card are to supply multimedia and game fans with the needed power.

Our test device, called 8951G-2631687Wnkk (LX.RJ202.059), has a price of about 1699 euros. The buyer gets a fast solid state drive, model Intel X25-M, with a memory capacity of 120GBs, though. And there is also quite a bit of main memory available because Acer has equipped its Aspire Ethos 8951G with 16 GB of DDR3 RAM. Acer has also installed a 750 GB hard disk (7200 revolutions per minute) from Western Digital for the other memory requirements. A BluRay drive has also not been forgotten. The manufacturer provides an optical drive from Matshita for this. The 18.4 inch sized Full HD display supplies a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The 5.1 sound system, which promises a great sound experience, is one of the special features. In addition, the touchpad can be removed and used as a remote control. Moreover, features like USB 3.0 or a fingerprint reader have also been installed.

System Performance
We simulate the test devices application performance with the benchmark tools PCMark Vantage and PCMark 7 from the software developers Futuremark. The Acer Aspire 8951G places itself in the front ranks with 11637 points in PCMark Vantage. The laptop, Alienware M14x with the same CPU and GPU, clearly achieves more points (14302 points) in PCMark Vantage. However, the Dell model, XPS 17-L702X, reaches considerably fewer points (7649). The system currently is on the 4th place in PCMark 7 (status: 06. 28. 2011). The Alienware Notebook M14x again achieves more points, even if only fewer (3595 points). Overall, a top performance in terms of application performance, which is mainly due to the installed SSD.

AcerCloud extended to Windows Android iOS

  • Acer Extends AcerCloud to Top Three Operating Systems, Making it Easy to Share Files and Media among Windows, iOS and Android Devices

2013-01-07
LAS VEGAS,NV
Acer today announced cross-platform support for AcerCloud, the company’s file sharing and media management solution, free to Acer customers. Consumers can now share, retrieve and enjoy their multimedia and data files using a variety of computing devices, regardless of which operating system they are running – Windows, Android or iOS.

AcerCloud uses the free space on a PC’s hard drive as cloud storage space.  Users simply designate one of their PCs as their “Cloud PC,” enabling them to use the available hard drive space on their own PC, giving them security and full control over their storage needs.  And unlike other cloud solutions, consumers won’t receive constant reminders about exceeding capacity with solicitations to pay for more storage.

“With AcerCloud, Acer now supports free file sharing between all of the key mobile devices, adding tremendous value to Acer customers,” said Acer President, Jim Wong.  “AcerCloud greatly simplifies our customers’ ability to manage all of their digital assets across all of their devices, regardless of platform.”

Remote Access and Wireless Connectivity – Anytime, Anywhere
Users can also use the new “Remote Files” application for direct access to any of their Windows PCs from any of their other devices.  They can upload and download files on any Android, iOS, or Windows device, whether at home or on the road, using Wi-Fi or their cellular network service.

Other enhanced features of AcerCloud include:

AcerCloud Docs – Effortless Portability
A feature especially convenient for professionals, AcerCloud Docs enables users to push their Microsoft Office documents to any of their Windows, Android or iOS devices.  For example, a document edited and saved on a PC will be pushed to AcerCloud and available for download and viewing from any of their other devices wirelessly and automatically. These files will be synced at AcerCloud and available for 30 days from the day files were modified.  There is no limit to storage capacity.

PicStream – Instant Picture Streaming
PicStream allows consumers to push all their photos to any of their Windows, Android or iOS devices at anytime, anywhere.  They can take pictures with their smartphone or tablet, and view them instantly on any of their other devices. These pictures will be synced at AcerCloud and available for 30 days from the day the pictures were taken. Like documents, there are no limits for storage capacity.

clear.fi – Enjoy Music and Photos Anywhere on All Devices
With AcerCloud clear.fi, consumers’ multimedia libraries are available for managing and enjoying on any device; users can manage their pictures on their PCs and view them on their smartphones and tablets.

In addition, a user’s complete music library is available and can be streamed or downloaded and enjoyed on any device running Windows, Android or iOS, from any location.

Availability and Pricing
The new version of AcerCloud will be available for online update starting in January 2013, and will be bundled on all Acer consumer PCs starting in Q2 2013.

HP Pavilion dm3t

The HP Pavilion dm3t has been on the market for a while now, but it has quickly become HPs most popular 13-inch laptop competing against more expensive notebooks like the 13-inch Apple MacBook. Is this laptop with a Core i3 processor and Intel integrated graphics a good purchase?

Our HP Pavilion dm3 (dm3t) features the following specifications:

* Intel Core i3-380UM Processor (1.33GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) + Intel HD Graphics
* 13.3-inch diagonal HD HP BrightView (glossy) LED Display (1366 x 768)
* Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
* 3GB DDR3 memory
* 320GB, 7200 rpm HDD
* Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n wireless
* Bluetooth 3.0 (Ralink Motorola BC8)
* 6-cell Li-ion battery (62 Wh) and 65W power adapter
* Dimensions: 12.83 (L) x 9.15 (W) x 0.88 - 1.26 (H) inches
* Weight: 4.1 pounds
* MSRP as configured: $624.99

Build and Design
HP updated the Pavilion dm3 series late last year with a new low-voltage Intel Core i3 processor and a fresh design with a new cooling system designed to make the notebook more "lap friendly." Not only is this 13-inch laptop coolerf to the touch, but it looks cooler than the previous generation of the dm3. In short order this notebook became the trend setter for HPs consumer notebook line as the HP Pavilion dm1z and the the HP Mini line of netbooks were designed with a similar external appearance.

Build quality is on par with what weve seen from the rest of the HP Pavilion notebooks and HP mini netbooks. The plastics used in the chassis are durable and thick enough to prevent flex or cracking under pressure. The plastic screen lid does an okay job protecting the screen but the middle of the lid does bend inward under firm pressure. The lid also features a rubber-like matte black paint job which is great for avoiding those fingerprints that show up on glossy notebooks. The screen hinges offer enough tension to hold the screen in place but are loose enough so you can open the laptop with one hand.

HP decided to give the new dm3 a clean look with a two screwless access panels located on the bottom of the notebook. Simply remove the battery and slide a release switch to upgrade the RAM or swap out the hard drive. This is actually a great idea not only for making upgrades easier but it has the added safety measure of forcing you to remove the power supply before you can mess with the internal components (something you should do anyway).

HP EliteBook 8740w

The HP EliteBook 8740w has been on the market for a while now, but it is still the largest and most powerful workstation in HPs current lineup of business notebooks. This massive workhorse features Intel processors, your choice of Nvidia or ATI workstation graphics and is available with HPs exclusive 17-inch "DreamColor" display. Its been a long time coming, but we finally took a closer look at this desktop replacement to see if it really is a graphic artists best friend.

Our review unit of the EliteBook 8740w features the following configuration:

* Intel Core i7-820QM Quad-core Processor (1.73GHz, 8MB cache, 3.06GHz Turbo Frequency)
* Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
* 17.0-inch WUXGA+ anti-glare DreamColor display (1920 x 1200)
* 1GB (GDDR5) ATI FirePro M7820 Workstation GPU
* 8GB DDR3 RAM
* 320GB 7200RPM HDD
* DVD+/-RW Optical Drive
* 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Modem, and Bluetooth Connectivity
* 8-Cell 73WHr Battery
* 3-Year on-site Warranty
* Dimensions: 1.3" x 15.5" x 11.1"
* Weight: 7.9lbs
* MSRP: $3,552 as configured (starting price: $1,999)

Build and Design
The HP EliteBook 8740w is a "mobile workstation" designed to meet very specific requirements for performance, durability, power consumption and a host of other features. In each case the EliteBook line meets or exceeds those standards, so before you even try to life this almost eight-pound notebook you know its built to be tough.

The main body of the laptop is covered in the "HP DuraCase" and "HP DuraFinish" which is essentially a hard plastic and strong magnesium alloy inner shell much like its predecessor strengthened by a brushed aluminum outer shell that is scratch resistant. HP uses a darker color on the outside of the mobile workstations and a lighter silver finish on the standard EliteBook series. The outer shell of the screen casing is made of metal, but the inner screen bezel is plastic. The entire chassis from the base to the screen lid feels exceptionally strong and resistant to flex. The keyboard is the only exception to that rule since it has a tendency to "bounce" under your fingertips when you type with heavy pressure.

HP says that this mobile workstation "has been tested and meets the military standard MIL-STD 810F tests" and weve seen HP demonstrations where this EliteBook was exposed to excessive heat, vibration and water and kept running. Additionally, the 8740w also features hard drive shock protection in the form of HP 3D DriveGuard which helps protect your hard drive in the event the laptop gets dropped or violently bumped. You can also configure the 8730w with a solid state drive (SSD) if you need extreme speed and resistance to vibration.

In terms of expansion, the EliteBook 8740w uses two simple plastic covers on the bottom of the notebook (each held in place with standard Phillips head screws) so that you or your IT department can easily access the hard drive, wireless cards or RAM for fast upgrades. The optical drive can also be removed and replaced with a second hard drive or SSD if you need more storage. The bottom of the notebook also features a dedicated docking station port, external battery port, and a convenient place to store your business card.
